Pest Control in Wasaga Beach
Sand changes what nests here, and a town that triples in summer changes when everything happens. Peak wasp aggression and peak occupancy land in the same fortnight.
Wasaga Beach has a pest calendar unlike anywhere else in our area, and both of the things driving it are unusual: the ground is sand, and the population swings enormously between February and August.
Ground-nesting wasps
Yellowjackets nest in the ground readily and they want soil that drains well and excavates easily. Sand is close to ideal. That makes ground nests disproportionately a Wasaga problem — they turn up along dune margins, at path edges, under shed floors and in lawns, far more than on the clay ground inland at Stayner or Creemore.
A ground nest with a busy entrance in a lawn where children are playing is a genuine hazard rather than a nuisance, and it is the one wasp call we treat as same-day regardless of the time of year. The entrance is often much smaller and less obvious than the colony below it, which is why people find them with a lawnmower.
The August collision
A wasp colony peaks in size and defensiveness in late August and September, which is exactly when this town is fullest and when every deck, patio and outdoor eating area is in constant use. The long weekend through to Labour Day is the busiest fortnight of our year here and it is entirely predictable. Booking a nest removal on the Friday of the long weekend is difficult for everybody; a call the week before is not.
Seasonal properties, opened in spring
A large share of Wasaga housing is seasonal or part-time, and an unoccupied heated building is close to ideal for rodents — warm, quiet, undisturbed for months. The worst infestations we see all year are in properties opened in April that were closed in October, because the population has had an entire winter with nobody in the building.
The exclusion work for a seasonal property belongs in August or September, before you close it, with monitoring left in place inside. Discovering it in spring routinely means contaminated insulation on top of the rodents.
Cottage conversions
A great deal of housing here started as seasonal cottage and became year-round accommodation in stages, built by different people at different times. Those buildings have more junctions, more mismatched additions and more unsealed penetrations than anything purpose-built, and that is exactly what an exclusion inspection is looking for.
